This correspondence is universal, because the heart reigns throughout the body and also the lungs.

The heart and the lungs are the two fountains of all natural movements in the body, and the will and understanding are the two fountains of all spiritual activities in the same body; and the natural movements of the body must correspond to the activities of its spirit; if they did not correspond the life of the body and also the life of the mind would cease; it is correspondence that makes both of these to exist and subsist.

Its variations are that its heat is either slow or quick, full or feeble, soft or hard, equal or unequal, and so forth. Thus it differs in gladness and in sorrow, in tranquillity of mind and in anger, in bravery and in fear, when the body is warm and when it is cold, also variously in disease, and so forth.

All affections belong to the love and thus to the will. This is the source of the common expressions, " a magnanimous heart," "a timid heart," "a joyful heart," "a sad heart," a soft heart," "a hard heart," "a great heart," "a little heart," "a whole heart," "a broken heart," "a heart of flesh," "a stony heart," "fat, soft, or vile in heart," "having no heart," " giving the heart to do," "giving a single heart," "giving a new heart," "laying up in the heart," "receiving in the heart," "not reaching the heart," "hardening one's heart," "lifted up in heart," "a friend in heart," also the terms "concord," "discord," "madness" "vecordia"and many other like expressions.

And in the Word, the "heart" everywhere signifies the will or love, for the reason that the Word was written throughout by means of correspondences. This is why it is said in the Word that man must love God "with the whole heart and the whole soul," which signifies that he must love with the whole will and the whole understanding.

Also that God will create in man "a new heart and a new spirit," where "heart" signifies the will, and "spirit" the understanding, because when man is regenerated he is created anew. For the same reason it is said of Adam that Jehovah God breathed into his nostrils "the soul of lives," and made him "a living soul," which signifies that God breathed into him wisdom. Moreover, "the nostrils," from the correspondence of respiration through them, signify perception, and for this reason an intelligent man is said to be "keen-scented," and an unintelligent man is said to be "dull-scented.

This was done in order to make evident that the Divine wisdom, which is meant by "the Holy Spirit," proceeds from Him. That soul and spirit are predicated of respiration is also known from common speech, for it is said of man when he dies that he "gives up the ghost anima seu spiritus ," for he then ceases to breath and respire animare et spirare. Also, "spirit" in most languages means both the spirit in heaven and the breath of man, and also wind. From this comes the idea that prevails with many that spirits in the heavens, also the souls of men after death, and even God Himself, because He is called a spirit, are like winds; and yet God Himself is Man; and so is the soul of man after death, also every spirit in the heavens; but they are so called because from correspondence "soul" and "spirit" signify wisdom.

All thought is of the understanding, and all speech is of thought. Man cannot think except the breath of the lungs concurs and agrees, consequently when he thinks tacitly he breathes tacitly; if he thinks deeply he breathes deeply; likewise if he think slowly, quickly, intently, gently, eagerly, and so forth; if he holds his breath entirely he is unable to think except in the spirit and by its respiration; and so forth.

That the speech of the month that proceeds from the thought of man's understanding makes one with the respiration of the lungs, and so makes one that he cannot produce the least of sound and the least part of a word without the concurrent aid of the lungs through the larynx and the epiglottis, every one can know from living experience in himself, if he wishes to. It is known that the heart governs in the body by arteries and veins. That the lungs govern there any anatomist can see; for the lungs by their respiration act upon the ribs and the diaphragm, and through these by means of ligaments and by means of the peritoneum, upon all the viscera of the entire body, also upon all its muscles; and they not only enwrap these, they also penetrate deeply within, and so deeply that there is not the least part in a viscus or muscle, from surface to inmost, that does not derive something from the ligaments, consequently from the respiration.

This is especially true of the stomach, because its esophagus passes through the diaphragm and is closely related to the trachea which goes forth from the lungs. For this reason the heart itself has besides its own motion a pulmonary motion, for it rests upon the diaphragm, and lies in the bosom of the lungs, and through its auricles is coherent and continuous with them; also from the lungs the respiratory motion passes into the arteries and veins.

Thus the heart and lungs are bed-fellows in a common chamber separate from the rest of the body, which chamber is called the chest. This, too, has been shown from heaven. It was granted me to be present with angels who presented this in a living way. Perhaps it is the breakup of a relationship, the loss of a pet or the death of a loved one. There is nothing more devastating to us than loss. It hurts the heart and leaves us with an emptiness that is difficult to fill. It is something that everyone on the planet will have to deal with many times in their lives, so I thought that I would talk about some of the ways that it can be made a little easier, less painful, and with minimal suffering in the context of Traditional Chinese Medicine TCM.

I find that I tend to treat conditions in waves. It is common for a patient to seek out treatment for say, anxiety, and then you find that for the next little while, there is a constant stream of anxious patients coming to see you.

And lately, many patients have been suffering with grief. Grief is a natural, healthy emotion and is an important part of being human. Unpleasant as it may be to feel, it is important that we feel it, make our peace with it, and let it go. I am not talking about letting go of the memory of the pet, the person you are no longer with, or the loved one who has passed away.

Those are memories you will have forever. It is the grief itself that must be expressed so that it can be let go. This is healthy. So, how do we measure grief? It is true that you cannot listen to grief with a stethoscope, or measure it with a blood test. How it is experienced is highly individualistic. The severity of the grief is not reflected in how it is seen from the outside, it is measured by how it is felt by the individual, or experienced from the inside.

The breakup of a relationship may to one person be sad but manageable, but to another may cause the fabric of their lives to unravel. The loss of a pet to one person may be unpleasant, and devastating to another. The severity of the loss is measured in how it is FELT, not by some external metric, comparing situations with levels of grief. Chinese medicine is concerned with grief that is repressed, unexpressed, unable to be expressedexpressed without control or in the proper context.

Emotions are only considered pathological when they are particularly intense, felt for prolonged periods, unacknowledged or unexpressed. So how do we express grief in a healthy way? This is what I would like to share with you.

And to do so, we will have to look briefly at the way Chinese medicine sees the body, the emotions and their connection to our health.

Chinese medicine has a holistic view of the body. Everything is seen to exist within the continuous circle of nature. When the elements of nature are in balance, life is in harmony and flourishes. Humanity cannot be separated from nature, we are nature, manifest as people. Living in harmony with the world around us is the way to maintain health.

If one were to live out of balance with nature, illness would develop.The lungs are an organ very close to my own heart literally having been asthmatic my whole life. This, plus very acute hayfever, is what brought me to homeopathy over 30 years ago. While the hayfever improved very quickly, the asthma has been a longer term issue and has given me much time to consider the deeper meaning of poor lung function aside from just the physical symptoms.

While the trigger for asthma and other lung conditions can appear to be environmental, inherited, gut- or vaccination-related, closer investigation usually reveals a much deeper cause. The lungs encompass the heart centre and the emotions. The symbolism of many of the symptoms which affect the lungs is breath holding, being in a state of emotional hurt, a sense of giving up and fear of living life fully, with the mucous which often accompanies these conditions a physical manifestation of unshed tears.

Grief is so often an underlying component of the constitutional type of the patient with respiratory issues. If we look back through the family history not only may we see asthma, bronchitis, hayfever, emphysema, but we may also see grief.

This may be grief over several generations — death, loss, abandonment, orphaned children — all of these I have seen in patients with respiratory problems. T ypically, five patients presenting with asthma would all get a different remedy because each case is unique, regardless of the diagnosis being the same.

Of course any remedy we select needs to have an affinity for the lungs in order to succeed, and support through winter and for acute flare ups are part of any management plan for respiratory illness. If you have children with asthma, it is worth looking not only at the environment they are growing up in, but perhaps your own childhood environment and the belief systems which have arisen from this experience.

With small children it is often difficult to see what the cause might be without taking into consideration the parents and maybe even grandparents! But frequently looking back through the generations we can discover issues somewhere in the family which result in lung symptoms further down the line.

This is especially true if these issues are unresolved or suppressed. Pneumonia may indicate that we are desperate, tired of life and have emotional wounds that are not allowed to heal.

Bronchitis may indicate an inflamed family environment, with arguments and raised voices, and here arises another feeling frequently found in lung disease — that of fear.

Panic attacks creep into this discussion with hyperventilation or over breathing being a feature of this condition. Eventually patients who suffer panic attacks may learn to control the situation but always there is the need to look deeper. Control and being controlled is a major component of respiratory illness manifested in a range of interesting and creative ways. I would also add here that this can be to gain approval and is another form of control — self control and being controlled.

When you cannot breathe, you are not enjoying life because you are living your life for someone else and always worrying what others think! Sometimes they have been born into families where there is a lot of control and a lot of rules which they are fearful of breaking or high standards which they feel they cannot achieve, leading to feelings of unworthiness see below.

They may spend their lives holding their breath. One of the deepest issues of lung symptoms is that of feeling unworthy or unable to attain perfection, leading to difficulties with the breath and consequently with the soul! Dethlefsen also says that the breath is the umbilical cord through which life or prana flows. It is the point at which we experience the external world coming in and then have to choose how we deal with it.

And let us not forget that our lungs are our largest organ of contact with the world. The lungs have an internal surface area of some 70 square metres, while the skin surface actually covers only 1. Whereas with the skin we have the choice of touching other people or things or leaving them alone, the contact we establish through the lungs being indirect and largely unconscious, is actually mandatory.

In fact, disease symptoms often get shunted between the lungs and the skin!The Lungs are the organs of respiration, responsible for supplying oxygenated blood to every organ of the body and eliminating the waste matter from the cells through our expiration. In emotional and spiritual terms, the Lungs balance the ability to yield and demand, give and take, hold on and let go. When the Lung Metal energy is out of balance, order and discipline are rigidly maintained, the emotions are kept under tight control, rules and routines become inflexible, and the body begins to stiffen up.

Physically we are more prone to bronchial infections and sinusitis. Our allergies are amplified and issues like asthma and heaviness of the chest can appear. The Large Intestine is our great reminder of how to expel that which no longer serves us, as well as providing us with enough fuel to enter our next stage of evolution.

Metal, which governs organization, communication and our mind, assists the process by helping us set limits and protecting boundaries. This season can be a tough one for most to deal with, as it can deeply tap into our core issues, on an emotional and physical level.

Metal provides us the power to refine ourselves, and boost us into the next state of our cycle, with no drama. Meaning it peels the dramatic none-sense which is often the sadness and grief classic association to the lungsmanifesting situations that demand the sword of truth to rip it open.

How to Protect the Lungs : ways to heal and regenerate

The metal tie-in to this reminds us that the actual waste itself carries a major load of energy, that it actually give us strength to evolve. Like compost, we process waste and alchemize a form of fortified soil to nourish our garden. With these forces in play, energetically it can certainly provide an existential crisis on a lot of levels, orienting us to really See where we are going and how we are choosing to live our life.

Now is the time to face the truth and clear it all out. Various systems of self-mastery teach that by controlling your breath, you can achieve and maintain physical vigor, mental clarity and emotional tranquility. The ancient Taoists developed a practical discipline of breathing called Qi Gong to increase vitality, extend lifespan, and prevent disease.

This is a wonderful skill to learn as the Summer gives way to Fall. Another example is Kundalini yoga, which is a rigorous practice of many different kinds of breathing techniques to access higher consciousness. Sleep is another important aspect of staying healthy in the Fall. The ancients advised that people should retire early at night and rise with the crowing of the rooster during the autumn.

The Wei-Qi circulates on the surface between the skin and muscles and works to warm the body. If the Wei-Qi is weak, the skin and muscles will not be warmed properly. This is why people tend to feel cold when they're sick.

A weakness in the lungs can lead to a weakness in the Wei-Qi, making a person prone to frequent colds. Lets unburden ourselves of old hurts and resentments. A good exercise is to write down the hurts and resentments we feel lingering from the previous year.

In Chinese Medicine the health of the spleen also correlates to the lungs; for example, if a spleen is weak, there is a propensity for colds and sinus problems.
